The Department of Pharmacology and Toxicology

The Department of Pharmacology and Toxicology is concerned with teaching of curricula including pharmacology, basic and clinical toxicology and biostatistics to Pharm. D. students. Pharmacology is the study of drug actions on biological systems. It is truly multidisciplinary in scope. Pharmacology course is intended to help the students to understand actions and uses of number of pharmacologically active drug classes. It emphasizes the mechanisms by which different members of each class act on their target receptors and the applications of pharmacodynamics to therapeutics. Drug interactions, pharmacokinetics and adverse effects of individual drugs are properly addressed. Basic and Clinical Toxicology is concerned with the studying of the harmful effects of drugs and chemicals. It also addresses the incidence, prevention and management of clinical toxicity cases. Biostatistics is the science of applying new or existing statistical techniques to health related questions. It is also the art of assisting researchers in health related fields to make appropriate inferences from their data relative to chance; to make valid estimates of population parameters and to design studies in a manner so that the maximum amount of information can be obtained. Impact of chemicals on the Saudi environment is also covered. These courses represent an integral part of the Pharm. D. curricula in the Faculty of Pharmacy, King Abdulaziz University.

Objective

  • Provide high quality undergraduate teaching in pharmacology, toxicology and biostatistics so as to prepare Pharm. D. students for subsequent clinical sciences
  • Provide a supportive and expert environment for students pursuing postgraduate qualifications
  • Continue its well-planned, high profile research with a special emphasis on drug development and environmental toxicology

Mission

Our mission is to provide the highest quality of educational opportunities to Pharm. D. students, to advance scientific knowledge and improve human health in KSA through leading research in drug-related sciences.
